Durer: “For Christ’s sake, can’t you see that….
An article featured on the Home page of The Art Newspaper's website announces the opening of an important exhibition on Dürer. It reports, however, that Dürer’s Munich Self-portrait (above): “continues to baffle observers. Despite the fact that Christian iconography is now more or less forgotten, most experts believe that the pose shows associations with representations of Christ. Now, half a millennium after the work was completed, the self-portrait seems to equate Dürer with the Saviour of the World.” Of course, it does. It’s about time arts journalists and museum curators visited this website to find out how and why all the great masters portray themselves as Christ, not just Dürer.
For those new to the site, start with the theme The Artist as Christ.
