Every Painter Paints Himself

Portraits of the Artist and An Alter Ego

By Simon Abrahams. Every Painter Paints Himself provides a brief look at a new understanding of portraiture. Using visual comparisons of portraits to self-portraits, the book reveals that well-known portraits are not portraits as we think of them at all. Nor could they ever have been accurate likenesses of the sitter because they resemble the artist. Five different portraits of Napoleon, all quite different, each the resemble the artist. Thus the famous images of our historical heroes are not like photographs but images of the artist in the guise of the sitter, the artist as a great man, for instance, or in some cases, as the creative devil too. The artist, we learn. always, one way or another, paints himself.
