Basquiat in Paris
Basquiat at the Musée de L’Art Moderne in Paris is well worth seeing for anyone who wants to come to grips with this difficult artist. It is amazing to see how much one man can produce in a short time, especially if one considers that what’s on show must be only a small fraction of what he produced. He may have been a druggy but he had a work ethic that would have put a Wall Street lawyer to shame.
Unfortunately, once again the catalogue is a waste of money. There’s a reminscence by an old friend, a chronology of his life, the record of an early interview, a discussion of the myth that has grown up around him but only two short essays on the work itself, neither of which even begins to explain what it all might mean. There are no catalogue entries either. Basquiat may not be the greatest artist but he's good and deserves better.

Missed the Paris show. Thanks for the write up. Now about to attend the Bilbao Guggenheim with some EPPH perspectives in mind. This should also be a mind expanding Basquiat show, in my case, at least!
