Every Painter Paints HERSELF!

Left: Leyster, Self-portrait, detail (c.1630)
Right: Labille-Guiard, Self-portrait with Two Pupils, detail (c.1785)

We get few complaints here (thank you!) but the ones we do receive are usually about gender. For those that are counting, then, two more women artists were added to the list last week: Judith Leyster and Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. An article on Leyster is already online; one on Labille-Guiard will be added soon. However, I should point out that while it is true that women artists need more representation, there are even more great male artists missing from this site than female ones. I do my best to cover as many as possible but I cannot do them all.
