Show me the Money!

A gallery at the Guggenheim New York filled with 100,000 dollar bills. Installation by Hans-Peter Feldmann.

If you are in New York, do visit Hans-Peter Feldman’s winning installation for the annual Hugo Boss Guggenheim prize. The prize is $100,000 so Feldman took the exact amount in dollar bills and pinned all 100,000 of them to the walls and columns of the side gallery at the Guggenheim New York. Boring, you might think, but boring it isn’t. There’s something simply magical about walking into a room with $100,000 pinned to the walls. People just stand there gob-smacked. It’s either wonder at how someone (or even a team) could pin so many bills so accurately, all evenly-spaced from floor to ceiling, everywhere….or it’s wonder at how the public can be allowed into a room filled with so much money for the taking…...or it’s wonder at the idea itself. Who would have thought of it? Whichever it is, it’s worth it.
