Titian as God

Right: Detail of Britto's engraving after Titian's lost Self-Portrait
There's a whole new theme at Every Painter Paints Himself and one I've been looking forward to because more than any other theme on the site it demonstrates how artists followed the various traditions of mystical Christianity and not the philosophical Christianity that takes up page after boring page in art books. It's called The Artist as Christ. Yes, they were philosophers but you must look at their art through the eyes of a mystic to see what they painted. That is why no art scholar has ever noticed before that Titian painted himself as Christ. If you can't imagine an artist would paint himself as God, as I've said before, you'll never see it even if it's staring you in the face.
So take a look at this first entry; there will be many more to come.
