Warhol Shooting

POP! A New Musical @ Yale Repertory Theater

I just read on The Art History Blog about a musical on Andy Warhol that ran in December 2009 at the Yale Repertory Theater. It includes a scene in Warhol's studio in the 1960's with actors playing famous American artists who come in and cause a ruckus. Here's how the story is told:

"My favorite scene took place at a New York City bar where Warhol trespasses on the turf of some famous abstract expressionists: Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, and Jackson Pollock. The “cowboys” of the art world, Motherwell, Kline, and Pollock are seen here as if they come straight out of a western movie, only they use paintbrushes instead of revolvers [my italics]. The ensuing duel involves splatter painting, expressions of emotion, and the production of an abstract expressionist work of art on the back wall of the theater."

It seems that using weapons for paintbrushes comes as naturally to artists today as it did in the Renaissance.
